Be Consistent

There is no better feeling for a triathlete than crossing the Ironman finish line. Exploding with pride as the announcer declares that “you are an Ironman.”

Going into the 2023 race season it is time to make that dream happen.

The difference between being successful in a triathlon and not reaching your goals comes down to this single factor; CONSISTENCY. Strive to be just a little better than yesterday, every day. I do it every day over and over again, and it allows me to achieve results.

It is not enough to do a single intense workout and expect to be faster, fitter, and stronger. The workouts you habitually do every week for many weeks make your body faster, fitter, and stronger.

Consistency is not a skill or talent. You have control over it.

One of the key elements to success in any endurance sport is putting in the work over time. Staying consistent every week leads to fitness gains and limits injuries so you can reach your full potential. Every Monday is an easy swim for me. Every Tuesday is a hard run, every Thursday is a hard bike ride, and so on.

Learning to achieve consistency in training distinguishes the great from the excellent.

Now you may want to ask, “how can I stay consistent?

The reality is; you may not be able to get 100 percent of your workouts in each week, but if you hit 80% or more of them, then you are training consistently.

Have a plan and follow it to the best of your abilities, which will help you achieve great results.

Even if you don’t have time to complete a full workout. Do a shorter version of it. That way you stay consistent and continue to make forward progress instead of skipping it all together.

Consistency is essential in training, especially if you want to improve your performance. Doing something repeatedly while increasing effort over time is known as progressive overload training. It has been proven to be the most effective way to generate progress in any field. Athletes use a certain muscle set or function (in our context, swim, cycle, run) in a precise and repeated manner, working for longer periods of intensity followed by crucial rest.

Consistency is the key for anyone who wants to stay triathlon strong.
